Editorial Review of 33 Club

Old Town just got a little swankier. Known for its endlessly hip, romantic and adorable storefront restaurants, Old Town has never really had that seriously grown-up place to dine. Enter the 33 Club, the new venture by Chicago restaurateur Jerry Kleiner.

Just walking into the restaurant is breathtaking. The exterior is pretty unassuming, so you're somewhat unprepared for the lofty ceilings and large-scale decor that awaits you. Of course, unassuming on the outside and surprising within goes right right along with the premise of the restaurant. 33 Club is hearkening back to the days of 1930s private supper clubs – 33 specifically is a nod to the end of the prohibition (oddly, if you add the numbers in the restaurant's address you also get the number 33).

There are three basic areas to the restaurant – the polished but not too uptight bar, the sweeping dining room and a front patio during nice weather. All together the restaurant seats around 275, but offers anonymity and space without feeling cold.

At the bar most people choose a drink from the stunning ceiling-high glass wall that holds the booze and snack on nibblets like $3 deviled eggs or bacon popcorn. Other favorites include the smoked bacon white cheddar burger with a fried egg on top ($12) or the lighter grilled salmon salad with potatoes, cucumbers, tomatoes, broccoli and green beans ($12).

For dinner most diners nosh on the 16-ounce bone in rib eye steak in a red wine sauce ($33) or the broiled Lake Superior white fish fillet ($18).

The vibe of the restaurant skews older, but it also makes a great place for young professionals to play dress up for the night.

Average cost: $10-$20
