You've walked by Shoes before. No, no—don't protest. If you haven't sauntered by this pub you've passed by one just like it: the everyman's neighborhood bar that practically no one takes note of but everyone should.
Tucked away on a section of tree-lined Armitage, the dimly-lit Shoes quietly presents itself with a hand-painted sign. Memorabilia from every imaginable Chicago sports team lines the walls alongside photos of regulars who have called Shoes home for years, patrons who settle in to watch the game in an atmosphere that can only be described as familial. Come around often enough and Karen, the bartender, will treat you like one of her own. Attentive and quick, this lady can make a drink that hits the spot.
Despite its decor, Shoes should not be mistaken for a sports bar. Laud-worthy perks include cheap booze ($3 beers, $2 shots, $4.50 for mixed drinks), dartboards and a pool table. The jukebox is full of classics, and you can almost always find an empty booth. Stay long enough and Karen just may pop a pizza in the oven for you and your buds.
