Cactus Gold Coast's slogan, "man vs. margarita," doesn't give an impression of great sophistication, especially as the challenge is scrawled on a giant fish that hangs over the establishment's entrance. But if the exuberance of the bar's off-the-clock professionals, rowdy tourists and young Gold Coasters says anything, most Cactus guests declare themselves contenders without giving a hoot about elegance. Decorum
has to go a bit by the wayside with the 22-ounce Big Lush margarita in hand. Just don't say you weren't warned: "Our Jose Cuervo Gold margaritas are the reigning champ" of this joint, the owners say. In the contest of man versus enormous margarita, dear drinker, you don't stand a chance.
If you're not in the mood to contend with Jose, opt for a Dos Equis or an old-fashioned bottle of Miller or Bud. For food, the menu doesn't venture far beyond typical bar fare. But sometimes wings, nachos and a few burgers are exactly what the doctor ordered for an afternoon of chilling on the patio. Expect big crowds when there's a Cubs game on TV; the bar, as well as the beer garden in front, is well-equipped with screens that provide optimal home run views. At night, crowd inside with your fellow debauchees and hit the dance floor.
