Editorial Review of English

The team behind Eat Well Drink Better has yet to let us down on their moniker's pledge, as bar-hoppers can head to Bar Celona, Union Park, Grand Central and The Central for plenty of good grub and a buzz. This gastropub marks the crew's first foray into River North and offers patrons a three-pronged chilling experience: The spot allows guests to "dine, drink and lounge on three different levels." Billiard tables scatter throughout the space, which recalls the Art Deco era with pastel terra cotta, ornate ironwork, carefully detailed chandeliers, tile mosaics and vintage photographs of Chicago. A view of the skyline lies behind its giant windows that overlook LaSalle Street.

The menu invites patrons to eat well with London-tinged appetizers like the English crisps (waffle fries topped with cheddar cheese, braised shredded pork, red cabbage and sour cream) and curry skewers of shrimp and chicken served with a yogurt dipping sauce. Other options include ale mussels, steamed with ginger and red curry. A selection of sliders includes the turkey and mushroom burger, crab cake and shredded pork. The Euro-sounding pressed sandwiches come in versions like salmon, served with caper mayo, spinach and cucumber; shrimp, with avocado and doused in a lemon vinaigrette; and a fried-egg BLT, topped with applewood smoked bacon.

Patrons can drink better by indulging in the spiked house specialties. Impossible-to-resist cocktails include the Tea Cup, made with vodka, iced tea, lemonade and fresh cucumber slices, and the Earl Gray Mint Martini.
