Hidden away in an isolated corner of Michigan Plaza's food court, Hey Sushi Express is easy to miss unless you're seeking it out or in particular need of a place to sit for lunch. (The eatery offers ample seating for about 20 customers.) An offshoot of the now-defunct Lincoln Park restaurant once located on Clark Street, Hey Sushi Express serves up modest Japanese fast-food. The sushi menu consists of the usual popular maki selections—like California, spicy tuna and salmon rolls—as well as more elaborate offerings like Dragon rolls (shrimp tempura, avocado and cucumber topped with
unagi); expect to pay $5.95-$7.95 for most rolls.
Show up for lunch early and you may be able to grab a surprise that's not on the regular menu, like the jalapeno maki ($6.99), tuna enveloped in jalapeno, spicy mayo and crunchy tempura bits. You may not be able to get some of the items that are on the menu, however; many of the appetizers listed aren't actually served. The ones that are available are hit-or-miss. The sweet potato fries ($2.95) are overcooked and much too salty, but the beef gyozas ($3.95 for six) make for a savory small meal.
You won't find high-concept sushi-bar fare here, but the word "express" in the title should've already told you that. For those looking for decent sushi in a flash, however, it's fresh and reliable lunchtime eating.
