The concept of a bar inside a liquor store has always been quite an interesting idea, generally resulting in a strange brew of people you'd be hard pressed to find anywhere else – except, of course, in another bar/liquor store combo.
Ukrainian Village's Loop Tavern is a member of this rare breed and does its part in fulfilling the needs of neighborhood locals who are asking for nothing more than a cheap beer, a good seat to watch the game and zero fuss.
Loop Tavern is a reasonably wide open space with seats wrapping around the room as well as a number of chairs at the bar. A crowd of fairly older individuals populates the tavern – the kind of folks who have seen and done it all and lived to tell about it. If you're lucky (or unlucky, as the case may be), one of them may share a story or two with you over a beer. The bar’s selections include Miller Lite, Old Style, Budweiser and PBR on tap for $2.25, as well as a modest selection of imported and domestic bottles ranging from $2.50-$4. And, you can't forget about snacks like Slim Jims and peanuts – a proper accompaniment to a beer and the game on TV.
As you're making your way out of the bar, take a look at the liquor store’s beer selection, and you may be surprised at what you see. Along with the likes of PBR, Miller, Bud and Modelo are craft beers like Bell's, New Holland Mad Hatter, Three Floyds' Robert the Bruce and a couple different kinds of Great Lakes. A limited selection of wine is also available, but the liquor store’s pride and glory is, of course, its liquor. Chances are you’ll find whatever it is you’re looking for.
