Gentrification is a hot topic in Chicago and often, a fancy restaurant or boutique in an otherwise underdeveloped neighborhood can cause quite a commotion. But don't expect too much uproar over West Town's NXXT. This restaurant and bar has something to please all types.

The modern and clean decor, with modular decorations and spherical hanging lamps, will surely win over neighborhood newcomers and condo-inhabitants, and the restaurant's friendly, unpretentious vibe (the managers walk around to every table to make sure all diners are happy) is something everyone can appreciate. This is exactly what the owners and partners of NXXT wanted: an upscale, contemporary American place that appeals to everyone in West Town, from those on a special date to a group of old friends sharing memories over a meal.

Chicken, beef and pork are the stars of the show here, with standout items being a 12-ounce, bone-in pork chop served over smoky bacon applesauce with roasted vegetables (entrees average about $20). The NXXT burger ($12), 10 ounces of black angus beef dressed with tomato, lettuce, sun dried-tomato aioli, a fried egg and mozzarella, served with a side of insanely delicious sweet potato fries, will win over any burger connoisseur.

The only people who will have a problem with NXXT's menu are vegetarians and health-food enthusiasts. If you fit into either of those categories, don't worry. Order up a salad and drink the rest of your allotted caloric intake, because the bartenders here are generous on the pours and the bars nod to classic cocktails should not be missed. Beer drinkers will get a kick out of the large selection of brews on tap, including Allagash.

If dessert is more your thing, the cookies and milk, two warm, huge chocolate chip cookies served with a glass of milk, will make you feel like a kid again.
