Mimicking the game from which it takes its name, Peek-a-Boo Bar & Grill hides at first (it's located in a remote corner of West Town, off a slow stretch of Grand Avenue), then reveals itself to much surprise and enjoyment.
Once you find the place via its clever neighborhood watch-style sign, you'll find there's a whole lot to like. The corner bar's perfect for letting the breeze in on a warm summer night. There are highboy tables, exposed-brick walls, a deep green color palette with red accents and a mirror behind the bar. Chicago photos frame the walls, with the star of the show being an aerial shot of the Metra line train that runs across the street from Peek-a-Boo.
We visited earlier on a Saturday night, and business was a bit slow. My friend and I immediately felt comfortable and welcomed by our server as we ordered our first round of drinks. My friend couldn't resist the internet jukebox, which calls up songs by almost any artist in seconds. At four credits for just $1 (most songs are one to two credits), I felt for the other patrons who had to deal with our sporadic Hall & Oates, Snoop Dogg and Prefuse 73 choices, but thankfully, no one made a peep.
As of now, Peek-a-Boo has a fully stocked bar, but no specialty drinks. This may change once the place settles into the neighborhood. The food selection is pretty basic, with Italian choices like sausage and peppers and meatball subs. There's also classic bar grub like buffalo wings, chicken sandwiches, fries (a sweet potato version, too) and pizzas, which would all go down great with one of the beers on tap.
