| Gospel artist won her first Grammy in 1995 after being nominated 11 times! Her group Albertina Walker's Caravans (which formed in Chicago in 1951), has produced more stars than any other group in the history of gospel -- including Inez Andrews, Shirley Caesar, James Cleveland, Dorothy Norwood, Cassietta George, Bessie Griffin, and even future disco diva Loleatta Holloway -- before Walker retired the group in the late sixties, though they've gotten together for a number of reunion tours. The origianl group included her, Ora Lee Hopkins, Elyse Yancey, and Nellie Grace Daniels. Walker is still a major star. Speaking of Grammys, Walker was nominated again in 1996, for Best Traditional Soul Gospel Album, Let's Go Back: Live in Chicago. Her new album, I'm Still Here probably will be, too... She's apparently begun work on her next album with producer Sanchez Harley. Born on August 29, 1929 in Chicago the youngest of nine children, she heard her mother singing in the Dr. Watts chorus, and as a child made up her mind that she wanted to be a gospel singer. Walker joined a number of groups, including the Pete Williams Singers, the Willie Webb Singers, and the Robert Anderson Singers before starting the Caravans in 1951.
