Chico Freeman

Born in Chicago (July 17, 1949) into a musical family (son of tenor sax legend Von Freeman, and nephew of guitarist George Freeman), Chico Freeman earned a Math scholarship to Northwestern University. While at NU, Freeman switched from his original instrument (trumpet) to his father's instrument. After studying with Muhal Richard Abrams and Joe Daley, and getting a masters degree in composition from Governors State University, Freeman settled in New York City.

The member of the AACM has played with Dizzy Gillespie, McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones, Charles Mingus, Jack DeJohnette, Art Blakey, Wynton & Branford Marsalis, Hank Jones, Freddie Cole, Joe Henderson, Bobby Hutcherson, Roy Haynes, Von Freeman, Arthur Blythe, Billy Hart, Lester Bowie, Cecil McBee, Earth Wind & Fire, The Eurythmics, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Tito Puente, Arturo Sandoval, and Eddie Palmieri.

Among his recordings are Spirit Sensitive (1978; India Navigation), Destiny's Dance (1981; Contemporary/OJC), and Kings Of Mali (a good disc which is now pretty much unavailable).
