| After two years without a new album, The Handsome Family's Through the Trees (which the Chicago Reader's Monica Kendrick chose as one of her "top 13" records of 1998) follows up on the critical success of Milk and Scissors. Both cut right to the perfect dark, depressing folk/country chase... After drummer Mike Werner left the band a year ago, the Sparks have thrived with a -- of all things -- drum machine. They've just finished mixing a third home-recorded album, Through The Trees. They're a member of the Carrot Top Records family. Sure, lyricist Rennie Sparks' pieces are more stories than songs (he's a performance artist, btw) and Brett Sparks' delivery is a sort of desolate monotone, but it's old country, all right. They also appear on the 2-CD compilation, Exposed Roots: The Best of Alt-Country.
