One of the premier jazz guitarists to hail from Chicago, Henry Johnson has performed with the likes of Stanley Turrentine, Joe Williams, Ramsey Lewis and Nancy Wilson. Now days, you would be hard pressed to catch a gig with Johnson here in town (though when here, he performs frequently at Andy's), as his talents have taken him international backing up the jazz legends above--among many others--and playing with his own quintet. He's clearly one of the best on his instrument today, though critics sometimes criticize his recent albums (for example, the Chicago Reader's Peter Maragask) as "lowest-common-denominator wallpaper aimed at George Benson fans."
Johnson is another example of the fertile jazz soil on which Chicago is built, a heritage which dates back to the earliest beginnings of the art. He's one of the headliners of the 1999 Chicago Jazz Festival.
