John Hughes III

Owner of independent label hefty Records, Hughes is the son of filmmaker John Hughes, he of the 1980s films set in Chicago's North Shore. After trying his hand at college (a year at Ohio University, and 2/3 of a year at Northwestern), the 22 year-old decided that releasing records (starting with his own band) was where he wanted to be. He released three records as Bill Ding, and now is trying a new tack as the less angst-full Slicker.

He was the musical supervisor for Reach the Rock, a film directed (the debut) by his father's longtime sideman Bill Ryan, slated to be released on Universal. Hughes got Tortoise's John McEntire to write some original music, and added new works by Bundy Brown, Dianogah, Polvo, and The Sea and Cake. Unfortunately, the film -- though finished for about a year -- hasn't been released, and the soundtrack (originally scheduled to come out on MCA (a Universal subsidiary), will probably eventually come out on Hefty.
