| Ralph's Kind owned and operated a loft in the south loop of Chicago called the Split Apple Sanctuary where the underground jam band scene of the early to mid 90's was born. The Split Apple was host to large gatherings twice a month where Ralph's Kind would invite other bands to share the stage in late night performances and jam sessions. As part of the Chicago jam band scene, RK paved the way for bands such as Umphrey's McGee in the Chicago clubs and gained recognition from VH1 as the “best unsigned band in Chicago.” Upon winning VH1’s “Best Unsigned Band Contest,” Ralph's Kind performed at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as part of VH1’s Rock Across America Tour; sharing the stage with John Fogerty of CCR. Continuing this success, RK was asked to join the Homegrown Music Network and toured the east coast U.S. in the fall of 1998. Ralph's Kind has also backed up legendary blues harpist Sugar Blue. The members of Ralph's Kind remain active in several national acts. Derek Berg (keys, vocals) and Paul Murin (guitar, vocals) perform across the country with Phish cover band Phix. Darren Garvey (drums, vocals) performs in Chicago with Buddy Nuisance and the Andreas Kapsalis Trio.
