Most hip-hop bands follow the standard percussion heavy boom-bap style, popularized by the Roots over a decade ago. Thankfully, this sextet breaks away from the norm with synth-heavy rhythms and sweeping vocals. Stylistically, it’s tempting to compare Royce to the Gorillaz—but the group’s latest album, Subtleties of the Game (featuring Qwel), helped them establish a uniquely distinct sound. This show at Darkroom will be a nice testing ground to see if locals are ready to embrace Royce. (J. Min)
