When JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound opened for Mayer Hawthorne in late September, it became overwhelmingly clear that something very special was happening. JC commanded the stage with his performance and on a number of occasions he hit (and held) a Curtis Mayfield-like falsetto. The Uptown Sound readily matched JC's intensity with a groove that sounded like it could have been lifted right out of the vaults of the legendary Stax label. The crowd was mesmerized. Since then the group (who met on Craigslist) has been touring incessantly; slowly establishing itself as one the premier contemporary soul bands of our time. This show at the Double Door will be in celebration of the band's recent signing to the famed Vampisoul label, a reissue label specializing in international soul and funk. Early arrival is recommended for this one and it would be a good idea to bring some extra cash, too, as both JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound's debut album ( Beat Of Our Own Drum) and a never-before-released 45 ("Baltimore Is The New Brooklyn" b/w "Bad News") will be available for purchase.
