When news broke in 2009 that Phantogram (Joshua M. Carter and Sarah D. Barthel) would sign with UK-based label BBE, fans scratched their heads thinking that the union was somewhat out of character for both sides. Phantogram's sound, described by Carter, is "beat-heavy pop" with dreamy synths, atmospheric guitar riffs and emotionally honest lyrics, a description not normally associated with a label that excels in hip-hop and funk releases. Nevertheless, the pairing has worked as their music has caught the ears of both beatheads and indie rock enthusiasts worldwide. Recently Phantogram has signed with another label, Barsuk Records, in order to reintroduce themselves to fans here in the U.S., and so far the response has been overwhelmingly positive. Their show at Lincoln Hall will be in promotion of their latest album Eyelid Movies, but don't be surprised if they come to the stage with a set of new material from a forthcoming EP. Opening for Phantogram will be Why? drummer Josiah Wolf, who is also promoting an album entitled Jet Lag. (J. Min)
