With seven albums to their credit, Oakland-based duo Zion I has been quietly releasing quality albums for years. Perhaps their anonymity is due to the fact that they've jumped from label to label, or maybe it's because they've avoided sweeping trends throughout their career; either way it seems like they're finally ready for a coming out party with their most ambitious project to date, Atomic Clock. The album (due out Nov. 9) was conceived through various jam sessions involving live instrumentations, which is a departure from how Zion I normally operates. The result is a cosmic blend of dubstep, electronica, and of course, classic hip-hop. As the title implies Atomic Clock is Zion I’s attempt to accurately acknowledge the relationship between time and rhythm, and by all accounts they’ve done a fine job. Opening for them will be talented super-group 1773 as well as budding lyricist Notrydo Sincere. (J. Min)
