Long before there was a thing even called hip-hop there was Blowfly—crass, crude, and lyrically gifted. Some say he’s the godfather of rap, which is up for debate, but what he has done is influence an entire style of rap popularized by lyricists like Devin the Dude, Del the Funky Homosapien and Snoop Dogg. It’s a heavy dose of humor, followed by a strong and heavy pimp hand. Some would call Blowfly an afrofuturist along the lines of Rammellzee, but more than anything he’s just an eccentric soul. An individual that never fit the mold, and instead of conforming just went the opposite way and ran with it. His performance at Reggie’s will be a once in a lifetime opportunity. (J. Min)
