You can't help but enter DulceLandia as the proverbial kid in a candy shop. A bubbly teen dressed in a pink polo shirt and red apron and wielding a shopping basket greets you at the front, but unless you have an iron will, you'll soon have to trade the basket for a full cart. The bins of bulk Mexican candy lining half the walls call out to sugar-crazed kids and adults alike.
Aisles of bagged candies and sweet snacks dominate the center of the store. Paleta Sellada Montes, or milk caramel lollipops, cost $2.99 for a bag of 40. Other fun treats include a chocolate wafer made with goat milk and bags of Del Sol peanut confections.
The massive quantities of candy have a noticeable purpose. The window displays feature thematic piñatas, a draw for curious children. For $17.99, you can take home a three-foot papier-mâché Snow White or Spiderman just begging for some stuffing and bashing. For those in search of less aggressive ways of getting to the final reward, the store offers star-shaped pull-string piñatas for $14.99 each.
DulceLandia is really not just a candy shop: It's a one-stop party store. Colorful streamers and banners hang from the ceiling, alluding to the wall full of decorations, table settings and oodles of rainbow-colored party favors.
The adoration of a child who gets a party à la DulceLandia should be reward enough for the parent shelling out the cash. But just in case there’s not an immediate outpouring of gratitude, DulceLandia also offers $18.99 bottles of chocolate flavored with Jose Cuervo Especial or La Suiza for a quick mood lifter.
