In an area that's somewhat lacking in chain groceries and quick, grab-and-go eateries, Gourmet 47 kills two birds with one stone. It feels more like a grocery store when you first walk in, with fresh fruits and veggies ordinarily displayed alongside long aisles stocked full of everyday items.
What sets Gourmet 47 apart from both Jewel and other gourmet markets is its prices and selection. The market only has four aisles, full of options that will satisfy both foodies and the common man alike. There are organic and non-organic eggs, fresh Greek feta cheese and packaged cheddar and, in perhaps the most glaring juxtaposition, diet Pepsi next to Kristall, a Swedish all-natural fruit soda in flavors such as lingonberry, black currant and orange. Because Gourmet 47 isn't a chain, it can cut the overhead out of many of its purchases, therefore making some prices surprisingly cheaper than what you could find in a massive supermarket.
The prepared foods section of Gourmet 47 occupies nearly a quarter of the space, offering sushi, hot roasted chicken, pre-made wraps and more than 40 different salads and side dishes a day.
For freshly prepared sandwiches and salads, order off the cafe menu. The Caprese sandwich translates the delicious salad of the same name into a hand-held delight by placing fresh tomato, basil and mozzarella on a pesto-smothered panini. The seared sesame tuna sandwich, with wasabi cream and pickled ginger on a toasted roll, is another superb option. Salads and sandwiches cost $7-$13; dinner entrees stretch to $32 for the Italian-style veal chop.
