One day in the early '90s, Terry Opalek decided it was high time he learn how to make his grandmother's toffee. The result can only be described as advertised: heavenly. The chocolate dissolves in your mouth, while the toffee is soft enough to chew but firm enough to give a satisfying crunch. Realizing that Grandma had a good thing going, Terry and his partner, Michael Frontier, sold the toffee to a few stores, then to many more stores, and finally, with good intuition, opened a sweetshop in West Town in 2005.

Terry's grandmother's recipe became McCall's Classic, a toffee with almonds and pecans. But as Terry "got obsessed" with infusions, other flavors were born, including the Chai-Town spice, toffee with cinnamon, cloves, ginger and other spices; Lavenilla, French lavender and Tahitian vanilla with white chocolate; and Asian Accent, with Australian ginger and crushed wasabi green peas in dark chocolate. Designer toffee costs $8.99 for a quarter pound; other treats include ice cream at $5.99 a pint and soft biscotti for $2.99.

Toffee is exported all over the United States from the rear of the shop, making its way from California to New York...and into the 2005 and 2006 Oscar Goody Bags, which resulted in a wall of celebrity pictures and signatures.
