Editorial Review of Uni-Mart

Where do you go for your one-stop, Filipino food shopping? Well, if you live in Andersonville, you go to the Uni-Mart on Clark Street. This Asian-themed grocery store (with emphasis on the Filipino) has everything you never knew you wanted, like Ligo brand squid in all-natural ink, Oishi coffee caramel popcorn and dried anchovies. That's not all, though—fresh produce is cheap yet typical of your average store, and so is the meat from the meat counter (minus the typical). Boneless butt, for instance, is but 2.09/lb. Pork stomach? Only $1.39/lb. And pork ears are, once again, 2.09/lb. There are various other items available, including many American products (Kit-Kat and Snickers bars, for instance), because people of all colors, everywhere, want to "break [themselves] off a piece of that Kit-Kat bar."

Conveniently located in the back of the store is Original Baker's Delight, a Filipino order-and-take-out (not a sit-down restaurant) with food prepared by the legendary and mysterious "Fry Master Chef" himself. Orders come in regular (around $6) or the considerably more expensive party size (around $40). Try the beef steak, the crispy chicken or the canton noodles, and grab a brownie for dessert (only $1.40).

But wait, Uni-Mart has more, like the Asian-themed video rental in the far left corner. If you've always wanted to watch mainstream Filipino movies but never knew how—or where to find them—then Uni-Mart is the place to get your fix. It's also the place to go for Christmas music, which plays well before the holidays and potentially all-year-round.
