Theater "Jon"
Runs through December 14 at Building Stage; 7:30 p.m. Thursday-Sunday; $25-$30
Collaboraction, a media-saturated, technology-driven theater company, presents a play set in a media-saturated, technology-driven dystopia. Director Seth Bockley adapts George Saunders' literary sci-fi story, about a corporately owned and branded teenager who can only experience the world through the filter of the endless commercials implanted in his brain. Look out for another hopped-up, ripely satiric and touching multi-media show along the lines of 2007's "The Intelligent Design of Jenny Chow."
"Jarred: A Hoodoo Comedy"
Runs through December 14 at Chicago Dramatists; 7:30 p.m. Thursday-Saturday; 6 p.m. Sunday; $15
Can hoodoo heal a broken heart? Teatro Luna is best known for its ensemble pieces, solo performance sprees that bring a large number of hugely varied Latina stories to the stage at once. This fall, the Lunas bring their acting chops and their excess of soul to a more traditional play. "Jarred," by local Luna Tanya Saracho, is about Alicia, a woman who gets dumped and can't deal. Her solution? Black magic. I'm sure we can all relate.
There are plenty more plays waiting in the wings this week...check 'em out here.
