Weekend Warrior: 12/31/08

Five things to do in Chicago this weekend, from the obvious to the absurd.

1. Midnight Yoga
10:30 p.m.-midnight Friday at Bloom Yoga Studio; $20
After celebrating the new year, drinking your weekend away may feel like "been there, done that." So instead of putting on your best going-out ensemble again, just wear your most comfortable sweatpants and t-shirt to Bloom Yoga Studio for a relaxing evening of yoga and live music. For those who just can't start the weekend without alcohol, wine and cheese will be provided afterwards.

2. MS Pub Crawl
2 p.m. Saturday at Schubas; $30 donation
If you're still looking for a bar-hopping-filled weekend, then why not paint the town red while helping out a good cause. Multiple Solutions, a young professionals group dedicated to ending multiple sclerois, is hosting its 12th annual MS Pub Crawl benefiting the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. This year's crawl starts at Schubas and will feature up to 10 other venues along Southport Avenue (between Belmont and Addison).

Tatsu Aoki
3. Tatsu Aoki's Miyumi Project, "Electric Edition"
9:30 p.m. Saturday at Velvet Lounge; $15
Enjoy an evening of cross-cultural music as east meets west in an electrified performance that mixes American jazz with Japanese taiko drumming. Japanese bassist/composer Tatsu Aoki will be joined by guest guitarist Jeff Parker (Tortoise, A Cushicle), saxophonist Mwata Bowden and taiko drummers Hide Yoshihashi and Amy Homma.

4. Silent Night of the Lambs
7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Mary's Attic; $15
Looking for a different kind of holiday cheer? This theatrical production, on its last showing this weekend, features a serial-killing Santa Claus in a "Silence of the Lambs"-themed Christmas pageant. Campy and comedically vulgar, this show offers a nice change of pace for those all out of seasonal spirit.

5. Game Show Show
10 p.m. Saturday at Lakeshore Theater; $15
Always wanted to be in a game show? Just raise your hand, participate, and try to win prizes in various physical challenges, guessing games and trivia at this live game-show production. If you're afraid of potentially embarrassing yourself in front of a live audience, then just enjoy the evening while laughing at the willing volunteers.
