| 1913 - 1970 Albert Howard Carter was born and educated in Chicago, starting college at Northwestern and finishing at the University of Chicago, where he also earned his graduate degrees and taught for several years. He worked for the U.S. War Department during World War II and then embarked on an academic career. While teaching at the University of Arkansas, he developed an interest in Ozark folklore. Works:
