Timothy O'Grady

Just a few weeks after graduating from Northwestern University in 1973 (College of Arts & Sciences), Timothy O'Grady flew to a tiny deserted Irish island, where -- he had never been to Europe before -- he fell in love with a new country and culture. Since becoming an Irish citizen, he has become an author, and settled in London.

His first novel, Motherland (1989, Chatto & Windus) won the David Higham Award for First Novels. It was republished in 1995 by Vintage. I Could Read the Sky (1997, Harvill Press Hardcover), a lyrical novel about Irish emigration, was a collaboration with British photographer Steve Pyke, which has since been turned into a film.
