The former home of a cable car powerhouse, Michael Jordan's and Lalo's has been refurbished by the owners of English as a tri-level trifecta of food, liquor and entertainment. A veritable Costco of nightlife, Lasalle Power Co. is overwhelming in its warehouse dimensions, but "whelming" in its execution of restaurant, bar and music hall.
For food, the $3 sliders (in varieties like turkey, grilled peanut butter and banana and sloppy joe) will be familiar to those who have eaten at English (located just a few doors down). Likewise, the bar snacks and sandwich selections offer your typical burgers and wings, with the noteworthy exception of the Thanksgiving leftovers sandwich (roast turkey, stuffing and cranberry on ciabatta with a side of gravy). Also enjoy a $10 all-you-can-eat weekend brunch buffet from 10:30 a.m.-4 p.m.
The drink selection is also nothing out of the ordinary. Eight-dollar cocktails such as a mint julep, Tom Collins and raspberry gimlet make the list, as do wines by the glass, bottles of Magic Hat, Half Acre and Guinness, with Peroni and Goose Island on tap.
The third floor concert hall bills itself as an ode to infamous punk den CBGB, but the grit and grunge has been feigned in the form of a collection of rock memorabilia and a gothic decorating scheme, creating an atmosphere more akin to Bret Michaels' Rock of Love tour bus. If you're willing to sacrifice a little authenticity for a state-of-the-art sound system by Martin and a lineup of cover bands and DJs, you'll be happy here. But if you're a rock purist, you'd be well-advised to venture elsewhere.
In general, if you're looking for an all-in-one location for your night out on the town, Lasalle Power Co. is a good choice, but be forewarned that in trying to do everything, the place struggles to do anything well.
