Editorial Review of The Note

What the Metro has done for performers like The Smashing Pumpkins, R.E.M. and Talib Kweli, The Note has done for such legendary DJs as Ron Carroll, Gene Hunt and Craig Alexander, all of whom have graced its stage. Sadly, they won't grace it again; in May 2008, the bar decided to end its tenure as a music venue.

How that changes the atmosphere here remains to be seen; in the past, guests ranged from ancient Rastas to fresh-to-the-scene breakdancers. The space has been equally popular with local celebrities like Czarina Mirani (editor-in-chief of 5 Magazine) and David Ziemba of BrilliantlyMad Magazine.

Although it's known as the 4 a.m. bar in the area, you're better off arriving early and avoiding long lines or entry-refusal due to capacity issues (cover ranges from $5-$10). Once inside, you'll pass a bar, a giant fan (dress accordingly, it gets hot) and a room of pool tables. The deeper you enter, the darker it gets. Adjust your eyes to night-vision; the only sources of light are the electric blue beams coming from behind the glass blocks holding up the bar. Beers start at $2.50 and cocktails range from $6-$8.50.
