Alex Klein

Thirty-something oboist became Chicago Symphony Orchestra principal in 1992, replacing Ray Still, who went on to teach at Northwestern. A fantastic solo artist (insofar as the instrument has any solo pieces written for it), the Brazilian-born Klein is also a Northwestern University adjunct associate professor, as well as soloist with several Chicago-area ensembles, including the Chicago Sinfonietta. Klein, who made his orchestral solo debut in Brazil at the age of ten, has performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra and l'Orchestre de la Suisse Romande. First prize winner, International Competition for Music Performers in Geneva, Switzerland; winner of competitions and awards in New York, Tokyo, and Prague. This year, he will be recording the classical concertos of Kranz Krommer and Johann Nepomuk Hummel (ancestor of Centerstage editor Rob Cooper) with the Czech National Symphony under the leadership of Chicagoan Paul Freeman.

Founder and former director, Chamber Music Society of Seattle. Recordings of Vivaldi oboe concertos (Music Masters) and Bach's Brandenburg Concertos (on period instruemnts) as well as discs for Continental, MCA Classics and MHS. His latest recording, featuring 8 of Vivaldi's oboe concertos, is available from the Musical Heritage Society label.

BMus & artist diploma, Oberlin Conservatory of Music.
