| Chicago-born (June 30, 1937) pianist/composer, who belongs most squarely (if he can be categorized at all) in the Thelonious Monk/Cecil Taylor mode, began working with the Paul Williams R&B Blues Band in 1953, and for the rest of the decade played with various windy city luminaries including Gene Ammons, Von Freeman, Johnny Griffin, and Malachi Favors. In 1961, he toured with Dinah Washington, and accompanied Al Hibbler and Johnny Hartman. After a brief period in LA, where he worked with Roland Kirk and saxophonist Jimmy Woods, he moved to New York in 1963, to play with Joe Henderson, and to record under his own name. Hill was composer in residence at Colgate University in 1970-1, and lectured at a number of colleges. He played at the Montreux Festival in 1975, and still does sporadic tours. Among his recordings are Point of Departure (1964; Blue Note) and Shades (1986; Soul Note -- featuring Rufus Reid and Clifford Jordan).
