| In 1997, this 25-year-old Chicago native became the first pianist in half a decade to win the Naumberg, a classical competition for young musicians which delivers -- as its prize -- a string of concert dates around the country. A relatively unconventional fellow, Molinaro went to the University of North Texas instead of one of the usual conservatories, because they would let him study jazz in addition to classical piano (he's also studied with famed Northwestern professor Ursula Oppens), a background which has given him an interesting perspective on both the romantic and classical literature.
