Ardis Krainik

General director of the Lyric Opera of Chicago from 1981 until near hear death, Krainik (1929-1997) is widely regarded as having rescued the Opera from fiscal ruin, putting together years of acclaimed programs, while selling selling the house out for nearly a decade running. Krainik's programs have been balanced, and has given the company a national and international reputation as one of of America's premier opera houses.

She was born in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, and graduated from Northwestern School of Speech in 1951. She performed as a mezzo-soprano while serving as executive secretary beginning in 1954, and then was appointed assistant manager.

Krainik was posthumously awarded a Northwestern University Alumni Medal for national achievement.
