Barbara Schubert
 
A senior lecturer in the department of music at the University of Chicago, Schubert is the Music Director and Conductor of the DuPage Symphony Orchestra. She also leads U. of C. Student Performing Programs, including the U. of C. Symphony Orchestra as well as the U. of C. New Music Ensemble.

Born in Brooklyn, Ms. Schubert graduated summa cum laude from Smith College, where she began conducting. She studied music history and theory at The University of Chicago, and then studied with Herbert Blomstedt, Otto-Werner Mueller, Thomas Briccetti, Charles Bruch, and Iva Dee Hiatt, and participated in workshops with Max Rudolf and Pierre Boulez.

She won the 1982 American Conductors Competition, and served two seasons as Assistant Conductor of the Colorado Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1985, she was selected for the Tanglewood Seminar for Conductors, and studied with Seiji Ozawa, Leonard Bernstein, Kurt Masur, and Gustav Meier.

In addition to her other duties, she has guest conducted many other Chicago-area groups, including the Grant Park Symphony, the Contemporary Chamber Players, the Lyric Opera Center for American Artists, the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra, the Symphony of Oak Park and River Forest, the Fine Arts Symphony Orchestra of Park Ridge, the Chicago Chamber Music Collective, and Light Opera Works.
