Bella Voce

Long one of Chicago's premiere chamber choirs (the group was founded in 1982 by countertenor Richard childress under the name "His Majestie's Clerkes", with the intent of performing music of the English Tudor period), Bella Voce hopes to entertain, inspire, and educate through the performance of choral chamber music. Directed by Anne Heider, their wide-ranging repertoire includes a capella from the mid-to-late twentieth century (including works comissioned from American composers), and the sacred music of the Renaissance and Baroque eras. Chicago Sun-Times critic Wynne Delacoma calls them "A perfect balance between the celestial and the earthly,"

Since 1982, Bella Voce's concert schedule has increased from 5 to 12, and the group has gone from a volunteer chorus to a professional ensemble. Among the many CDs they've produced during that period are, Franke Ferko's Stabat Mater (Cedille Records, 1999); Home To Thanksgiving (Harmonia Mundi, 1999); Hear My Prayer (Cedille Records, 1998); Hallelujah! Great Choruses from Handel's Messiah (Narada Media, 1995); News of Great Joy (Centaur Records, 1993); Goostly Psalmes (Harmonia Mundi, 1992); Johannes Cornago, Missa de la mapa mundi (Harmonia Mundi, 1992); A Land of Pure Delight (Harmonia Mundi, 1992 & 2001) and In a Cold Winter's Night (Centaur Records, 1988). Their upcoming Folksong in Chorus is due out in January 2002.
