Bill MacKay

Owing as much to jazz as rock and instrumental pop, the melodic experimentation of guitarist Bill MacKay is a celebration of influences. A native of Pittsburgh, MacKay now lives in Chicago and regularly performs here with staples of the avant-jazz scene, including drummer Charles Rumback and bassist Matthew Golombisky for the group Darts & Arrows. That collaboration has yet to result in an album, but MacKay leads another, Broken Things, whose creations hinge on his unique arrangements and whose debut album Swim to the River was released in 2007.

Broken Things calls upon vets of the local jazz scene, counting alto saxophonist Greg Ward, bassist Jason Ajemian and drummer Tim Daisy among its members—and fittingly, its creations exhibit compositional maturity. MacKay has another psuedo-solo album, Bill MacKay & Sounds of Now, that surfaced in 2005. Ward and Rumback acted as contributors to the Sounds of Now release, a disc that began documenting MacKay’s sizeable and accessible skills.
