Local big-band jazz combo led by, you guessed it, drummer Bill O'Connell has been playing around the city and 'burbs for over 10 years. Though they play in the traditional '30's and '40's big band style, the band mixes in a number of original tunes as well as classic standards made popular by the likes of Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Buddy Rich, Glenn Miller, Sammy Nestico and Artie Shaw. They also dabble in covers of (relatively) contemporary tunes by artists like Blood Sweat and Tears, James Engram and Brian Setzer. In Chicago, one of the greatest jazz towns in the world, The Skyliners Big Band stand out as great practitioners of their art, keeping the classic jazz era alive. O'Connell, by day an auto mechanic instructor, has three self-released recordings. Unfinished Business, Play it Again Sammy, and their latest, That Toddlin' Town.
