Dark Star Orchestra

Formed in November, 1997 by erstwhile members of Uncle John's Band, Citrus and the Deadbeats, DSO is a Grateful Dead cover band with a twist -- at each of their shows, they cover an entire Dead concert right down to the last Donna wail and Jerry lick. Their Bobby sounds exactly like Bobby. Their Phil (unfortunately) sounds exactly like Phil, and so on. The similarities are really quite impressive.

What's more impressive is the virtuosity of our ersatz counter-culture heros, as the two percussionists blend seamlessly into the dissonant jams and lead guitarist John Kadlecik whips off guitar solos that Garcia himself was incapable of after about 1984.

Better catch these guys (and girl, if the show in question is between 1972-1979) soon. After a long run of popular weeknight shows at Martyr's, the band is spending more time touring, and plays periodically at the Park West.
