| Chicago-born (July 25, 1895) musician who was well-known for his violin, clarinet, and saxophone abilities. Howard appeared on W.C. Handy's first New York recordings in 1917, then returned to Chicago where he performed with his former teacher Charlie Elgar at the Dreamland Ballroom (1921). During the rest of the '20s, he worked with King Oliver, Carroll Dickerson and Erskine Tate, and then, in 1931, he joined Earl Hines' big band, where he remained until 1937. During the early '40s, he briefly retired from music (to become a shopkeeper), and then returned to music, playing with Kid Ory, Muggsy Spanier, and Bob Scobey (mostly on clarinet). In 1955, he rejoined Earl Hines in San Francisco, and remained there (although he only played with Hines until '62) until his death from a brain tumor September 2, 1966.
