As a leader of numerous Chicago jazz ensembles, David Boykin skips from hard bop to free jazz and often imparts free-verse hip-hop vocals onto his songs. His style could be described as interstellar jazz, inviting listeners to alien worlds while maintaining an earthly foundation. Boykin's founded groups include the David Boykin Expanse, the David Boykin Microcosmic Sound Orchestra and the David Boykin Outet, whose albums are released on his self-made label, Dreamtime Records. Dreamtime also puts out works of tangentially related groups like Nicole Mitchell’s Black Earth Ensemble. Boykin, also a member of Black Earth Ensemble, routinely collaborates with Mitchell and dozens of local standouts such as pianist Jim Baker and drummer Frank Rosaly.
