Dolly Varden

Quintet formed by now-defunct Stump the Host's principal songwriters husband & wife duo Steve Dawson (guitar, vocals) and Diane Christiansen (guitar, vocals, visual art) with Matt Thobe (drums), bassist Mike Bradburn, and guitarist Mark Balleto. The band, named either after either the fish or the Charles Dickens character, has signed a contract with New York's Evil Teen Records, who recently released their new album, The Thrill Of Gravity. Tortoise alum Bundy K. Brown mixed the record and David grubbs (Gastr del Sol) and Julie Liu (Rex).

After some interest and an offer from a major label, the band decided to stay on the indie side, and "just make records." Dawson & Christiansen had previously endured a similar ordeal (aftering being "discovered" by Jim Powers, best known as the guy who found Veruca Salt), one that eventually led to the break-up of Stump The Host.

After experimenting with a big guitar sound (a la the Chicago sound popular in the early '90s), Their simpler debut Mouthful of Lies (July 1995), one of the best Chicago records of the year, featured Poi Dog Pondering's Susan Voelz, and was recorded for $37.50 to boot... Yes, on top of being twangy and a bit depressive, it's all quite catchy, and -- thankfully -- there are a few sounds thand don't sound like they're always miserable. Some of their early demos were recorded by Brad Wood at Idful Studios, and a track "Plain" was included on the 1994 Subdisc compilation.
