A longstanding favorite with Chicago music fans, The Drovers are more than just one of those rock bands with a fiddle. The band has evolved its lineup and sound over the years, swinging back and forth between their rock and Irish folk influences depending on whatever suits them at the time. Some shows feature a healthy dose of (fiddle-supported) straight ahead rock, while others digress into Irish jigs of epic proportions. Speaking of Irish, they were the only Chicago band playing 1999's Guiness Fleadh festival... As a general rule, though, the sound can be classified as rock with a bit of an Irish Twist. Lately, The Drovers have had a propensity to drift into Olympian jams during their songs, attracting more of a hippie crowd.
Their albums include Little High Sky Show (Thermometer Sound Surface), Kill Mice Elf and World of Monsters. They recently contributed a song to the Marshall Field's United Way benefit album, Songs To Dream By. The Drovers also contributed to a tribute album supporting the not-very-well-known Chicago native songwriter Rainer Ptacek (Giant Sand, who has an inoperable brain tumor. Other contributers to The Inner Flame (Atlantic) include Jimmy Page, Evan Dando, Victoria Williams, P.J. Harvey, and Emmylou Harris.
