Earl Hines

Influential late (1903-83) pianist and bandleader who helped launch the careers of Dizzie Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Sarah Vaugn, and Billy Eckstine. Moving to Chicago from a Pittsburgh suburb, he established the piano as an important part of the jazz ensemble. Among his famous compositions are "Rosetta," "Piano Man," and "Boogie Woogie on the St. Louis Blues."
