Earmint

Robert Crums, aka Earmint, was born in Maywood, Il and raised in a suburb of Elmhurst. He attended a Latvian Sunday school until he was ten, and later transferred to York High School where he quickly became jaded with the overly pretentious social structure. That, coupled with his purchase of Nas’ Illmatic and a NIN’s EP, helped him appreciate the overall creative power that the individual can conjure in the face of a restrictive environment. This inspiration helped propel him forward towards a degree in animation at Columbia College, but once again he became frustrated with a scene that he best describes as, “A bunch of George Lucas ass-kissing.” A twist of fate ended up liberating Earmint when he inherited $2000 from his grandmother who was working at an assembly line in Nebraska. He bought a turntable, Mac G4 and an acoustic guitar, and the beat-making commenced.

Drawing from influences like The Cure, Depeche Mode, New Order and The Smiths, Earmint was able to create a sound that was as uniquely turbulent as his upbringing. Local hip-hop renaissance man, Anicron, eventually took notice and he was able to link Mint up with EV Productions and Murs, which resulted in the single “Be That/I’m The.” The floodgates opened from there as he began producing songs for Diverse, Psalm One, Longshot, Verbal Kent, Giraffe Nuts and Alltruisms. He has a solo album out now titled Another Early Evening and is working on a post-industrial instrumental album under his alter-ego, Flesh. (J. Min)
