| New England-born pianist Eddie (Haydn) Higgens began his professional career while studying at Northwestern University's music school. For the next two decades, Higgins performed at the big Chicago clubs, including the London House (where he led the house band for a dozen years, playing opposite stars like Stan Getz, Oscar Peterson, Dizzy Gillespie, Errol Garner, Cannonball Adderly, Bill Evans, and others), Blue Note, Brass Rail, Preview Lounge, etc. He recorded with a variety of musicians -- working in mediums ranging from Dixieland to modern jazz -- including Wayne Shorter, Jack Teagarden, Coleman Hawkins, Stan Getz, and others on over two dozen recording as a bandleader, and many more as a sideman.
Higgins has since semi-retired (to Florida & Cape Cod), though he has toured US and international festivals, and has continued to record.
The Chicago Daily News said he "plays piano with a master's touch... a dazzling dynamic range." Downbeat says "Higgins' renditions... sound like the definitive jazz text from which other versions are departures."
