Frank Catalano

Chicago tenor sax phenom recently released Pins 'n' Needles (Chicago Lakeside Jazz), the follow-up to his debut CD, Cut It Out!?! on Delmark Records.

A composition major at DePaul University, Catalano has performed with a number of notables throughout the US and Europe including Louie Bellson, Charles Earlund, Jimmy McGriff, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Clark Terry, Ira Sullivan, David Sandborn and Tony Bennett. He is also a current member of the Chicago Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra. Of him, Chicago Tribune critic Howard Reich says "Though barely in his 20s, Catalano plays with the musical maturity and technical fluidity of a seasoned pro."

The Chicago Reader's Peter Margasak, counters that he "is bursting with ideas, but he's yet to sort them out... he's still grasping for a style, aping Coltrane one minute and Sonny Rollins the next."

Nonetheless, his quartet is joined by one of the city's tenor sax legends, Von Freeman, and three other local vets (John Campbell, Kelly Sill, and Joel Spencer) in an afternoon set at the 1999 Chicago Jazz Festival.
