Goblins

Humorous masked musicians focus as much on the performance of their live shows (which have included an Alannis Morissette cover, an all Paul Revere and the Raiders set, an operatic "Unabomber Suite", and special "guest" GG Allin) as on their music. On their Halloween show last year, their regular drummer emerged from a giant pumpkin during the middle of the concert.

They say this craziness is just what's missing from the modern music scene. Though I think the band is hilarious, not everyone agrees. Bottles and other objects have been known to go airborne during Goblin shows. Still, it's a very positive experience. Says Braden King, whose Truckstop label released the Goblins most recent disc, "What the Goblins offer is a lot of heart, a lot of entertainment for the money, and a lot of positivity. They make people feel good."

Band members (for the last two years, anyway) include the Phantom Creeper (lead singer), Buh Zombie (guitar), Beau Grumpus (drums), and Dom Nation (bass). All have apparently been fired from a job for wearing their masks to work. Early releases on 7" and 8-track capture mostly old line-ups, but the current line-up has put out a series of records which is easier to find. The 7" on Won't Go Flat features the theme from cable access show Chic-a-Go-Go. Their new 11-song Goblin Pride concise album (CA) was released on both Truckstop/Atavistic on CD and Mind of a Child on 10" vinyl. Also on Mind of a Child is their Kiss-inspired Goblin vs. Goblin double-7", where each member contributes one solo side (no four album opus for these fellows). Their (albeit stinky) cable-access TV show, Ha Ha Hanukah is available on videocassette.
