Hal Russell

Late (died 1991) founder of the NRG Ensemble was a charmingly sloppy avant-garde jazz saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist. He played on one of the first jazz records that could be described as "free" while with the Joe Daley Trio. The NRG Ensemble played a strange style of avant jazz, as Russell's chaotic approach was coupled with younger players of diverse musical backgrounds. The group has continued since Russell's unfortunate death.
