Ira Sullivan

One of the few jazzmen to excel equally on the trumpet (and flugelhorn) and saxophones (he plays the alto, soprano and tenor), Sullivan starred in Chicago from the '50s (often performing with guitarist Joe Diorio) until he moved to Miami in the mid-'60s. With Von Freeman, one of the leading lights of the 1950s Chicago hard-bop scene, Sullivan "can act as soloist, accompaniest, musical director and front man in a single setting." (Neil Tesser, Chicago Reader)

While he has only made two recordings in the last 15 years and hasn't toured extensively in a decade (last with trumpeter Red Rodney), he is still much revered in this city. Ira Sullivan performs at Joe Segal's Jazz Showcase and hosted "Famous Afterfest Session" during late August/early Sept. He can also be found on the East Coast Standards Time (2004) compilation CD where he plays tenor sax on four of the albums tracks.
