| Based in Chicago, composer and clarinetist James Falzone heads Allos Musica, an umbrella organization that includes ensembles and recordings that he leads. Falzone’s musical aesthetic is diverse — covering jazz, classical, chamber, world, improvisational and avant-garde styles — and even mixing in French folk as a key member of Le Bon Vent. He teaches in a faculty capacity at North Central College in Naperville, and he received an undergraduate degree from Northern Illinois University before attending New England Conservatory in Boston for a master’s degree. In addition to all of his Allos Musica ensembles, Falzone leads the Grace Chicago Consort at Grace Chicago Church as well as Klang, a group with local free-jazz stars that is inspired by the writing of 1950's jazz legend Jimmy Giuffre. Klang includes vibraphonist Jason Adasiewicz, bassist Jason Roebke and drummer Tim Daisy. Falzone also has a pair of solo recordings, the most recent of which, called The Sign and the Thing Signified, is a compelling mixture of neo-classical, jazz and film-score elements, all arranged with complex yet catchy melodies and rhythms. Falzone’s songs often are intricately structured without becoming too wild or untenable. Falzone also organizes a regular concert series with Allos Musica, which is home to a small imprint recording/publishing company, Allos Documents.
